A COMMON GROUND BETWEEN NEUROSCIENCES AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: EMPATHY, EMBODIMENT, EMOTION

چکیده
In the last decade, increasing popularity of neuroscience has involved architecture. Both neuroscientists and architects have endeavoured to understand how experience architecture works from standpoint cognitive functioning. This been possible thanks neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI discoveries like mirror neurons. These researches, despite their outstanding quality, are difficult implement for what concerns practice architectural design. However, there is a common ground where theory, phenomenology intersect, represented by empathy, embodiment, emotion. They frame awareness space counterpart visual perception. The main goal design make living but take meaning, it be “negative” human body. process comes into existence through “old” tools, i.e. mentioned Still, they can get new meaning if traditional hermeneutic blended with latest knowledge provided neurosciences.

The interaction between embodiment and empathy in facial expression recognition
Previous research has demonstrated that the Action-Observation Network (AON) is involved in both emotional-embodiment (empathy) and action-embodiment mechanisms. In this study, we hypothesized that interfering with the AON will impair action recognition and that this impairment will be modulated by empathy levels. In Experiment 1 (n = 90), participants were asked to recognize facial expressions...
متن کاملEmbodiment and enculturation: the future of architectural design
A half-century ago the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck encouraged designers to think about "space and time" not as abstractions in themselves but rather as cultural events better approached through the medium of "place and occasion." Van Eyck made this point on the basis of his own travels and through his extensive readings in cultural anthropology, and his prescience is only now acquiring the cr...
متن کاملEmbodiment, emotion, and chess: A system description
We present a hybrid agent that combines robotic parts with 3D computer graphics to make playing chess against the computer more enjoyable. We built this multimodal autonomous robotic chess opponent under the assumption that the more life-like and physically present an agent is the more personal and potentially more effective the interaction will be. To maximize the life-likeness of the agent, a...
متن کاملEmbodiment of emotion concepts.
Theories of embodied cognition hold that higher cognitive processes operate on perceptual symbols and that concept use involves partial reactivations of the sensory-motor states that occur during experience with the world. On this view, the processing of emotion knowledge involves a (partial) reexperience of an emotion, but only when access to the sensory basis of emotion knowledge is required ...
متن کاملEmotion Regulation Moderates the Association between Empathy and Prosocial Behavior
Theory and evidence suggest that empathy is an important motivating factor for prosocial behaviour and that emotion regulation, i.e. the capacity to exert control over an emotional response, may moderate the degree to which empathy is associated with prosocial behaviour. However, studies to date have not simultaneously explored the associations between different empathic processes and prosocial...
